3 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Can Give You a Headache

Thump. Thump. Thump.

A throbbing headache can ruin anybody’s evening. And your air conditioner could be the cause of it.

Here are 3 reasons your split system can give you a splitting headache (and what you can do about it).

1) Cold, dry air dehydrates you

Your AC not only cools your air, it lowers the amount of humidity of the air.

Lowering humidity is good to a point, but overly dry air can dehydrate your body. And even mild dehydration can cause mild to moderate headaches

Do this: Make sure you drink plenty of water while at home, especially on day where your AC runs often. Also, you can install a humidifier to work alongside your AC so that your home’s air stays at an appropriate humidity level.

2) Cold air can give you a mild brain freeze

According to one expert, cold temperature stimulates the trigeminal nerve, causing your brain’s blood vessels to constrict and thus create a headache.

Do this: If you find yourself having a headache, turn up the temperature on your thermostat a few notches and see if that helps soothe your symptoms.

3) Your AC can spread mold

Mold, which can cause headaches, may be living on your AC and get distributed around your home whenever the AC runs.

How does mold get there in the first place? Well, your air conditioner’s indoor unit is dusty, dark, wet and hot. These are the perfect conditions for mold spores to thrive and grow on the indoor unit’s evaporator coil.

Do this: To prevent mold growth on the coil, make sure your AC gets professional maintenance once a year. Also, consider installing an UltraViolet (UV) germicidal lamp in the indoor unit. This lamp uses UV rays to kill mold spores before they get the chance to grow.
