“Going Green” And Saving Money
Due to our uncertain economy we all seem to be looking for ways to save money. With the new Federal Stimulus Package you have a unique opportunity to install higher efficiency products, save money and “go green”. You are now eligible for a 30% (no limit) tax credit when you install a new geothermal heat pump. The example below illustrates just how much of a savings you can expect:
On a $20,000 geothermal system the homeowner will receive $6,000 ($20,000 x .30) + $2,000 for a total of $8,000 in Federal and Georgia State tax credits. In most cases this will pay for the installation of the loop on a geothermal heat pump. Visit Georgia’s Clean Energy Property Tax Credits, for more information.
Now let’s talk a little about how this type of system works and how it can benefit you.
Geothermal Heating & Cooling? What exactly is that?
Basically during the winter, heat is taken out of the earth and transferred to the home. During the summer, heat from the home is transferred to the earth. Its fuel source, the earth, is free. This is a fuel source that will never increase in price, will not have a delivery charge and can never be taxed. In addition, the by-product of this system is something we use everyday… hot water!
What are the benefits?
Lower Operating Cost. A geothermal heat pump system operates more efficiently than ordinary heating and air conditioning systems because it can deliver five units of energy for every one unit of electrical energy used. It combines stored earth energy with safe electric power, which enables you to save up to 60% for heating, cooling and hot water.
Enhanced Comfort. Geothermal systems provide comfortable air all year long and eliminate hot and cold spots. During heating, you'll experience warm air without the hot blasts associated with ordinary gas furnaces, or the cooler air of an air source heat pump. Additionally, when cooling, these units deliver cool, dehumidified air.
Quiet & Reliable. You’ll enjoy the quietness of your system since it does not require noisy outdoor units that can disturb your peaceful surroundings nor does it require any unsightly additions to your home’s appearance. Unlike air conditioners and heat pumps, geothermal units are installed indoors, so they are not subject to wear and tear caused by rain, snow, ice, debris, extreme temperatures or vandalism. Geothermal units have proven to be very reliable and require less maintenance.
Environmentally Friendly. According to the Department of Energy and the EPA, geothermal systems are the most environmentally friendly way to heat and cool your home. These systems emit no carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or other greenhouse gasses, which are considered to be major contributors to environmental air pollution. They are truly a natural, “green” heat pump.
