A clogged drain is one of the most common plumbing problems in any home. Whether it’s the kitchen sink or bathroom shower drain, all homeowners must face this dilemma at some time. Some of the major reasons for clogs in your kitchen sink, tub or shower drain include food, hair, grease, or even jewelry. Often times there is an easy solution to fixing this if you follow some simple steps. If you have continued problems make sure to contact a plumber – it may be more than a simple clog and need professional help.
Here are some simple steps to try:
- Check the drain pop-up stopper. Hair and debris can get stuck on this and cause a clog.
- If the drain pop-up stopper is clear, the problem might be in your drainpipe. You can use a plumber’s snake to clear the clog by sticking it down the drain and trying to dislodge the blockage by pushing it down. You can also try a wet or dry vacuum by using its sucking power to pull out what is causing the clog. This is a long shot, but you may get lucky!
- Another possible tool is a plunger. First, make sure the strainer or drain pop up stopper is removed. Put a good amount of water into the sink or tub and move it down and then up several times. This may help loosen up the clog to remove it easily.
- Always pour plenty of water down the drainpipe after using a plunger or vacuum to remove any left over clog particles completely.
Safety Precautions:
- Make sure that you take safety precautions while attempting this yourself. Use eye protection and wear gloves when using any type of chemicals.
- Always use an environmentally safe drain cleaner that is safe for your pipes. Some toxic chemicals can overtime deteriorate your pipes from the inside out
- Always be careful while handling any plumbing tools
- • When in doubt – Call a Plumber!
